National Awards have been, historically, in the center State cultural policy. In fact, its creation (in the year 1913), Presedia to the Ministry of Culture and National Culture Commission (as it was called in 1935, the year of its institution.)
Throughout the twentieth century, rewarded the literary, visual arts, drama, science and music. Were an instance of consecration of artistic creation and research in different fields of knowledge. In its first editions, were awarded the National Prize for Literature ": Arturo Capdevila (1920, 1923 and 1931), Leopoldo Lugones (1926), the controversial Zuviría Gustavo Martinez, best known as Hugo Wast (also in 1926 for his novel Desert stone), Carlos Ibarguren (in 1930, our land, Juan Manuel de Rosas) and Manuel Gálvez (in 1932, General Quiroga).
The tenth anniversary of its establishment, Ricardo Rojas (who founded the Chair of Literature Argentina the same year he appeared PN) was awarded the "National Essay Prize" for fundamental work that was: Argentina Literature . Philosophical essay on the evolution of culture in the Plata.
physician and poet Baldomero (Eugene Otto) Fernández Moreno, was exceptional: he received the National Prize for Poetry in 1926 by English Village, and in 1929 by Sonnets. However, in 1938, Fernández Moreno took twenty thousand dollars of the "National Prize for Literature, he was awarded for his poetry and two anthologies Romances and seguidillas. With that money, the author of "Seventy balconies and no flower" bought the house located at the corner of Francisco Bilbao and Indarte Rivera, in a neighborhood of Flores, then, was popular with "the houses cheap."
Other poets in the decades following winners were: Leopoldo Marechal (1940, by Sonnets to Sophia and The Centaur), Francisco Luis Bernardez (in 1944 for elementary Poems and Poems flesh), Silvina Ocampo (1962, by Bitter and sweet ), Juan Gelman, James Sylvester and Rodolfo Alonso (the three in 1997).
Among the narrators, Jorge Luis Borges won the National Book Award (in 1941) by The Garden of Forking Paths ; Conrado Nalé Roxlo (in 1955) by gates of purgatory, David Vines ( in 1962) to give the face , Manuel Mujica Lainez (1963), by Bomarzo , Carlos Gorostiza (in 1978), qu Brothers Arid, Isidoro Blaisten and Beatriz Guido (1982), by South Dublin and Passionate, respectively.
Also, the "Premio Nacional de Teatro" dramatic production distinguished authors such as Roberto Cossa, Carlos Gorostiza, Federico Leon and Mauricio Khartoum.

Under the scheme of National Awards, "The National Awards will be considered a stimulus to the authors that, through the work submitted has contributed significantly to the progress of the activity or discipline to compete." The
